6 Dead, Including Suspect, After Series of Killings in Michigan
Five people were killed and the suspected gunman was also found dead Friday in Michigan, as police carried out an extensive search involving two residences and a wooded area, authorities said.
Michigan State Police said officers responded to a reported shooting at a residence in Missaukee County, roughly 169 miles northwest of Detroit, shortly before noon. When authorities arrived, they discovered three people dead and another person critically injured. The surviving victim was transported to a hospital for treatment.
Police identified the suspect as 39-year-old Chad Hickman, who authorities said had left the residence before officers arrived.
As law enforcement launched a widespread search for Hickman, investigators located another person dead at a separate residence in the area.
Authorities issued a public warning on X, saying Hickman was believed to be armed and dangerous and urging residents not to approach him.
The search eventually led officers to a wooded area near Whitlock Lake, where they located Hickman’s vehicle. Police then discovered Hickman and another person, both deceased, in the area.
Authorities initially described the incident as a shooting investigation but have not yet provided details explaining how each victim died or whether the victims and suspect were connected.
Lt. Ashley Miller said the incident has deeply affected the local community and presented investigators with a difficult case. She said authorities remain focused on conducting a complete investigation and will release additional information as it becomes available.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths and are asking members of the public to stay away from the affected area.
The identities and ages of the victims have not been released. Authorities said the information will be withheld until their families have been notified.
